Most Common Orthopedic Injuries Treated
Orthopedic injuries affecting bones and joints can be caused by various factors including degenerative conditions like arthritis or disc disease, sudden trauma from a fall or automobile collision, repetitive stress injuries, and a shearing injury of the structures inside the knee joint (usually a ligament or meniscus – both structures in the knee that are commonly torn).
Sprained ankles are also very common. Incidentally, once a patient has sprained an ankle, it is much more likely to happen again, so a good physical therapist will try to recommend proper balance exercises to protect the patient from recurrence.
Wrist sprains and fractures are common from falling while trying to catch oneself to break the fall. The shoulder is structurally one of the most unstable joints in the body and is prone to injuries including dislocations, sprains, labral (cartilage) tears, or rotator cuff tears. Depending on your age, sometimes there can be a fracture of the shoulder.
Back sprains are also quite common especially with improper lifting techniques and repetitive movements performed at work.
Here are (5) five of the most common orthopedic conditions:
- Dislocated Joints. When a joint is forced out of position, the affected area swells, and the bone may be visibly displaced. Dislocations are common in the ankles, hips, shoulders, elbows and jaw.
- Bone Fractures. A break in the bone may occur as a result of a weakened bone density caused by osteoporosis or because of a sudden impact on your body. Fractured bones may cause numbness, redness, and/or severe pain to most patients. Frequently, the broken or fractured bone may result in limited movement of the affected limb or entire immobility.
- Knee injuries. When knee muscles and/or knee tendons are injured by sudden twists or severely impacted by conditions such as osteoarthritis, the knee joint will not function properly. Some patients experience challenges with immobility, pain and swelling in the affected area. Depending on the cause and severity of the injury, a physical therapist may recommend knee replacement surgery to your primary care doctor.
- Rotator cuff injuries. The shoulder muscles and tendons are crucial for the strength and stability of your arm. Any shoulder injury or overuse can cause them to break down suddenly or gradually over time. To treat a damaged rotator cuff, a physical therapist may recommend a variety of rehab treatments, including electrical stimulation, manual physical therapy, and specific strengthening exercises, in addition to potentially requesting your primary care doctor to prescribe anti-inflammatory medication, injections of cortisone, or even surgery.
- Sprains or Strains. Sprain injuries occur when the ligaments are stretched or torn. Ligaments are tissues connecting bone to bone. Bruising, pain, and swelling may be apparent after a sprain injury. Patients may even hear a pop when the damage occurs. Strain injuries happen when the muscles or tendons endure similar stretching or tearing. In addition to redness and pain, strain injuries may cause muscle spasms and difficulty moving.
