Hypermobility & Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)
Specialized physical therapy for joint hypermobility and EDS — stabilize joints, reduce pain and protect against injury.
Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is an inherited connective tissue disorder that affects collagen — the protein that gives structure to ligaments, tendons and joints. In the hypermobile type, joints move too far and are prone to pain, subluxation and injury.
Treatment focuses on controlling symptoms and preventing injury: building the muscle support that loose joints lack, managing pain, and protecting vulnerable joints. Every plan is designed around your subtype and the symptoms unique to you.
Common symptoms
- Joints that move beyond the normal range
- Frequent subluxations or dislocations
- Widespread joint and muscle pain
- Muscle spasms and trigger points
- Fatigue and balance problems
How we treat it
- Joint stabilization and core strengthening
- Low-resistance, high-repetition strength training
- Trigger point dry needling and myofascial release
- Bracing, splinting and taping to protect joints
- Balance and body-awareness (proprioception) training
- Low-impact aerobic conditioning such as cycling, swimming and walking
- Ergonomics and body mechanics training
Frequently asked questions
Can physical therapy help EDS?
There's no cure for EDS, but customized physical therapy can reduce pain, stabilize joints and improve quality of life. The key is a plan tailored to your subtype and symptoms — EDS patients often need a different approach than standard rehab.
Do you have experience treating EDS?
Yes. Hypermobile EDS is the type we treat most often, and our clinicians have written about it for our patients — see the related article below.
